As a visionary step aimed to transform Pakistan’s beauty and cosmetic industry, the Faculty of Pharmacy at Salim Habib University proudly launched its much-anticipated BS Cosmetic Sciences program on December 13, 2024, at the 10th Beauty Asia Exhibition & Conference held at Karachi Expo Center. The event brought together the nation’s leading beauty experts, academics, and industry pioneers to celebrate this monumental step forward in education and industry collaboration.

Ms. Masarrat Misbah, an iconic figure in the beauty industry, philanthropist and business woman, graced the occasion with her presence as the Chief Guest. Esteemed personalities like Dr. Sheraz Ali, Director, Baqai Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Baqai Medical University, Mr. Liaquat Jawed, Chairman, Morgan Group, also attended.

Adding more power to the seminar were industry professionals Mr. Mushtaq Ibrahim and Ms. Rabia Farzand Ali of Herbion Pakistan Limited, Ms. Summaiya of Morgan Group, and Ms. Mona Rajput, a celebrated entrepreneur and herbalist. Their insights highlighted the program’s immense potential to bridge education with the needs of a booming global cosmetics market.

Dr. Noor Kamil, Dean, Faculty of Pharmacy,  Salim Habib University, also addressed the audience at the event, highlighting the salient features of the university and our BS Cosmetic Sciences program. He stressed upon the necessity of building a foundation based on a combination of science and professional training in the education and industrial landscape of the cosmetic and beauty industry. He reiterated that beauty and wellness are not just about aesthetics but about inner confidence and joy, inspired by science, innovation and creating solutions that meet global standards.

Dr. Ghazala Ishrat, Chairperson, Department of Pharmaceutics, and In-Charge of the BS Cosmetic Sciences program, apprised the audience with a detailed overview of the program’s curriculum and compliance with HEC requirements. She gave a brief account of the cutting-edge courses on Cosmetic Formulation & Product Development, Quality Control & Assurance, Manufacturing, Distribution, Sales & Marketing, Digital Marketing & Social Media, Business Development, Ethics and Values in Cosmetology, and Product Stewardship. She also explained how this program is tailored to equip the students for industry leadership roles, describing the program’s scope covering dermatology, cosmetic procedures, philosophy and psychology of aesthetics, cosmetics and personal care, green cosmetics, perfumes & fragrances, etc.

Ms. Rubeena Jokhio of Skincare Pakistan shed light on the role and the vast career opportunities of cosmetic scientists in the profession. She anticipated that this program will unlock new horizons in the beauty and skincare industry in Pakistan.

The Chief Guest Ms. Masarrat Misbah, in her speech, appreciated the launch of BS Cosmetic Sciences, stating this to be a game changing program, which would bring a revolution in the beauty world of Pakistan which will bridge the gap between beauty and science and produce professionals who can create innovative yet safe cosmetic products. She emphasized the need for qualified professionals who can met the growing demand of this field in Pakistan.

Another highlight of the event was an engaging panel discussion themed “Is Beauty an Art or Science?” moderated by Ms. Rabia Noor, Lecturer Pharmacy, Salim Habib University, and facilitated by Vice Chancellor SHU Prof. Dr. Syed Irfan Hyder.

The session was concluded by a vote of thanks and awarding of shields to all the guests and participants.
